We all know that every day there are people around the world struggling to find/afford food and in many cases, lose their lives because of starvation. We see ways to donate to those in need after a natural disaster, or to help children in foreign countries, but many of us don’t realize that this struggle exists in our hometown communities. Throughout South Texas, families are in desperate need of help to battle hunger and we can all help. There are the food drives for canned goods at schools and churches and jars for donating money at the check-out lines, but there are other, more unique, ways that we as outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen can help the needy in a remarkable way. Hunters, working with Hunters for the Hungry, can bring and donate legally tagged and field dressed deer to get processed. After processing the meat then gets distributed to organizations like the South Texas Food Bank, which provides the meat to the individuals or families in need. This is a great program that enables people that can afford to give wild game animals, with the opportunity to directly provide a healthy and desirable food source that is greatly needed.
Keep in mind of the time of year, the Holiday’s. It is east to get caught up in all the commotion, but we need try and remember what is most important in our lives, be thankful for what we have been blessed with, and to help those that are in need. It is not difficult to donate a couple of dollars, a few canned goods, are even a deer. The holiday season can be stressful and relentless, but sometimes giving a helping hand can help comfort spiritual and psychological woes. I know that when I can help someone out, even if I don’t meet them in person, it makes me feel good knowing that I was able to aid someone. It makes me feel like a better person and it may do the same to you.
